soventec is a partner in the innovation cluster INTAKT, which is dedicated to the development of a new generation of active networked implants. Based on real-time medical measurements and patient control, nerve and muscle structures are stimulated according to the specific need or condition of the individual. The development focus of these innovative learning systems is on the design of completely new human-technology interactions between those affected and their implants, as well as the attending physician. Ethical, legal and social issues are taken into account throughout the development phase. The project will generate as universal a basic technology as possible for a variety of medical applications. These include the suppression of tinnitus, the partial restoration of grasping functions of the hand and the treatment of gastrointestinal dysmotility.
For the first time, this new generation of implants can accommodate larger contiguous tissue sections and organs in their entirety. In addition, patients are empowered to help shape their own therapy. In this way, the care of those affected is noticeably improved and their quality of life significantly increased.
First applications are the re-mobilization of the arms and hands after a paraplegia, suppression of tinnitus and intestinal motility in indigestion. The networked INTAKT implants can offer solutions here. Treating physicians and patients should be able to communicate with the implant network via secure interfaces - and thus optimally tailor treatment to their current needs.
